The complete concrete driveway guide for Worcestershire homeowners.
Concrete is the heavy-duty workhorse of driveway surfaces and, in pattern imprinted form, is also one of the most visually striking. At Cathedral Landscapes we install plain brushed, pattern imprinted (PIC) and exposed aggregate concrete driveways across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn – always reinforced, always with proper control joints, always with falls and edge details set out before the pour.
How much does a concrete driveway cost?
• Plain brushed concrete – the value tier, modern industrial look with broom-line texture.
• Pattern imprinted concrete (PIC) – premium decorative finish, mimics block paving, cobbles, slate or flagstone.
• Exposed aggregate – high-end designer finish, revealing natural aggregate in the mix.
Final cost depends on the finish chosen, the size and shape of the area, ground conditions and access. Free written and itemised quotes within 24 hours.
Concrete driveway finishes explained
Brushed concrete – cheapest finish, applied by drawing a soft broom across the wet surface to create fine parallel lines. Functional, grippy in the wet, modern industrial look. Best on contemporary homes.
Pattern imprinted concrete (PIC) – coloured hardener applied to the wet surface, then rubber pattern mats pressed in to imprint cobbles, slate, riven flagstone or block paving textures. Once cured, the surface is sealed for colour stability. Gives you the look of high-end paving with the seamless strength of concrete.
Exposed aggregate – surface laitance is washed away while the concrete is still green to reveal the natural aggregate beneath. Beautiful, contemporary, very durable, excellent slip resistance. A premium modern finish.
Why crack control is the most important detail
Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures, and any concrete driveway WILL crack if shrinkage isn't controlled. The professional answer is steel mesh reinforcement in the centre of the slab plus saw-cut control joints every 3 to 4 metres in a pattern designed to direct any cracks into invisible lines. We use A193 or A252 fabric reinforcement depending on use and saw the joints within 24 to 48 hours of pour. Done right, a concrete driveway shows no cracks at all.
SUDS, planning and concrete
Standard concrete is impermeable so a front driveway over 5 square metres needs planning permission OR drainage to a permeable area or soakaway. We typically design with a permeable edging strip, a recessed planted soakaway gulley along the front, or routed falls into the front garden – all of which keep the driveway SUDS compliant without needing planning. If full permeability is your priority, see our resin and gravel driveway pages.

Step 3
Most concrete driveways are completed in 2 to 4 days, with a 7 day cure before vehicles return.
Brushed is the value tier, pattern imprinted a premium decorative finish, exposed aggregate a high-end designer finish. Final cost depends on the finish, the size and shape of the area and ground conditions.
2 to 4 days of works, then a 7 day cure before vehicles return. Pattern imprinted finishes are sealed once dry.
30 to 40 years with periodic re-sealing on patterned finishes. The longest-lasting poured driveway surface available.
Wet concrete coloured with hardener and then pressed with patterned rubber mats to mimic cobbles, slate or block paving. Sealed once cured. Combines concrete strength with premium paving looks.
No. Concrete is impermeable. We design with a permeable edge or soakaway strip to comply, or recommend resin or gravel if full permeability is the priority.
Only without proper crack control. Steel mesh reinforcement plus saw-cut joints every 3 to 4m direct cracks into invisible lines. Done right, no visible cracks for decades.
Sweep regularly, gentle pressure wash every 1 to 2 years, re-seal every 3 to 5 years to protect the colour from UV and frost.
