The complete garden pathway guide for Worcestershire homeowners.
A well designed garden path does three jobs – it gets you cleanly from A to B in any weather, it leads the eye through the garden, and it lifts the whole space visually. At Cathedral Landscapes we install garden pathways across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn in every popular surface, always over a properly built sub-base so the path stays flat for decades.
How much does a garden path cost?
In Worcestershire in 2026 a typical 1m wide installed garden path costs:
• Gravel (with timber or steel edging) – entry-level garden path
• Stepping stones in lawn or gravel – entry-level decorative path
• Block paving path – mid-range, repairable, traditional finish
• Indian sandstone riven flag path – premium natural stone finish
• Porcelain paving path – high-end contemporary finish
• Resin bound path – mid-range permeable, seamless modern look
Variables that move the price – width (1.2m+ adds proportionally), curves and feature edges, planting bed reinstatement, and access for materials. Every Cathedral Landscapes pathway quote is written.
How wide should my garden path be?
600mm is the absolute minimum for one person to pass comfortably. 900mm to 1.2m is the sweet spot for a primary garden path – comfortable for one with planting brushing the edges, room enough for a wheelbarrow. 1.5m or wider lets two people walk side by side. Front gate to door paths should be at least 1.0m; secondary garden paths can be 600 to 900mm.
Which pathway material is right for my garden?
Indian sandstone – the most popular choice for British gardens. Natural stone in honey, grey, mint, modak or autumn tones. Riven (textured) finish is traditional and grippy; sawn finish is contemporary. Long lifespan, mortar bedded on full Type 1 sub-base for a flawless finish.
Block paving – the toughest pathway surface. Premium concrete blocks or clay pavers in herringbone, stretcher bond or basketweave. Ideal where wheelbarrows and ride-on mowers regularly pass.
Gravel – the lowest cost and easiest to install. Best contained in a stabilising grid for a wheelchair / pushchair friendly surface, otherwise loose with timber or steel edging. Country cottage character.
Resin bound – seamless, weed-free, contemporary. Excellent for paths around the front of the house or alongside a resin driveway. See our resin driveways page for finishes and colours.
Stepping stones – informal, soft, perfect for cottage gardens. Either set in lawn with grass between, or in gravel for a more defined route. Lowest cost feature path.
Porcelain paving – the premium modern choice. Almost zero porosity, stain resistant, available in stone-look, wood-look and concrete-look finishes. More expensive to source and lay (requires slurry primer) but virtually maintenance free.
How a pathway should be built
Whatever the surface, the construction underneath matters more than the stone on top. We excavate to 150mm minimum, lay a non-woven geotextile separation membrane, compact 75 to 100mm of Type 1 MOT sub-base, then bed the surface on either a mortar bed (sandstone, porcelain), a screeded grit sand laying course (block paving), or a permeable open-graded bedding (resin, permeable block). All joints are pointed in mortar or wide-joint slurry compound to seal out weeds and water. Edges are restrained with mortar haunch, kerbs, or treated timber.

Step 3
Most pathways are installed in 1 to 3 days with minimal disruption to the rest of the garden.
Surface tiers (1m wide): gravel and stepping stones are entry-level; block paving and resin sit in the middle; sandstone and porcelain are the high-end finishes. Final cost depends on length, width and ground conditions.
Indian sandstone for traditional gardens, block paving for high-traffic paths, gravel for the lowest cost, stepping stones for cottage gardens, resin for contemporary front paths, porcelain for premium modern looks.
1 to 3 days for most domestic paths. Walk on the next day (longer if mortar bedded).
600mm minimum, 900mm–1.2m comfortable, 1.5m for side-by-side. Gate-to-door paths 1.0–1.2m.
Yes. 75mm minimum of compacted Type 1 over a geotextile membrane. Skip this and the path sinks within a few years.
No – domestic garden paths don't need planning. SUDS rules only apply to front driveways over 5 m².
Resin bound and porcelain – seamless, weed-free, just sweep. Sandstone needs occasional re-pointing. Gravel needs top-ups and weeding.
