The complete new lawn guide for Worcestershire homeowners.
A new turf lawn is the fastest way to transform a garden – from tired patchy grass or churned-up builders' ground to a flat, lush green carpet in a single weekend. At Cathedral Landscapes we lay new turf across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn, sourcing from UK turf farms within 48 hours of cutting so the rolls go down fresh and root quickly.
How much does new turf cost in 2026?
• Premium hard-wearing turf supplied and laid on prepared ground – the standard choice for family lawns
• Shade tolerant turf blend – the upgrade for north-facing or canopy-shaded gardens
• Ornamental fine fescue turf (show lawn finish) – premium tier, for low-mown formal lawns
• Full ground preparation (remove old, rotovate, level, top soil, consolidate) – priced per area, included in your itemised quote
Final lawn cost depends on the turf grade chosen, the level of ground preparation needed, the lawn area and access. We provide a free written and itemised quote within 24 hours.
Choosing the right turf grade
Hard-wearing turf (perennial ryegrass + fescue mix) – the right choice for 90% of Worcestershire homes. Stands up to children, dogs, paddling pools, garden parties. Fast to root, recovers well from wear. This is what most UK turf farms specialise in.
Shade tolerant turf – higher proportion of fescue and meadow grass, lower proportion of ryegrass. For lawns under tree canopy, north-facing gardens or shaded by neighbouring buildings. Tolerates lower light but less wear-resistant.
Ornamental fine fescue turf – the bowling green / show lawn option. Looks spectacular but is delicate, won't tolerate kids and pets, needs more mowing (twice a week in summer) and regular feeding. Best for front lawns kept as a feature.
Why ground preparation matters more than turf grade
The biggest mistake homeowners make is laying turf onto unprepared ground – over existing grass, weeds, or builders' rubble. The old growth dies and rots underneath, creating an unstable layer the turf can't root into. Within months you have a patchy, lumpy lawn. We always do the full preparation cycle: remove existing turf with a powered turf cutter, kill stubborn weeds, rotovate the top 100mm, rake out stones and roots, screed level with fresh screened topsoil, consolidate by treading or rolling, and finish with a fine rake. Only then does the turf go down, edges butted tight, rolled in, and watered immediately.
When to lay turf in Worcestershire
Autumn (September to November) is the optimal window – warm soil, reliable rainfall, low evaporation. Spring (March to May) is the second best window. Summer turfing works but needs heavier watering and isn't ideal in drought conditions. Winter laying is possible outside hard frost periods but the lawn takes longer to establish. We lay all year round and adjust the watering schedule to the season.
First weeks – the only ones that matter
The first 4-6 weeks make or break a new lawn. Water heavily daily for the first 2 weeks, then every other day for week 3, then only in dry spells. Stay off the lawn for 2 to 3 weeks – light foot traffic only between weeks 3 and 4, full use from week 5 or 6. First mow at week 4 to 5, removing only the top third of growth. We send every customer home with a printed schedule and a follow-up call after 2 weeks.

Typical 50 m² lawn fully prepped and laid in 1 to 2 days. Aftercare schedule and follow-up call included.
Hard-wearing is the standard grade; shade-tolerant and ornamental fine fescue are upgrades. Full ground preparation is priced separately. Every quote is written and itemised.
Autumn (Sep-Nov) is best, spring (Mar-May) is second. We lay year-round outside frost and drought.
Light foot traffic from week 3, full use including children and pets from week 5-6.
Heavy daily watering for 2 weeks (twice in hot weather), every other day in week 3, only in dry spells from week 4 onwards. Always check moisture has reached the soil under the turf.
Hard-wearing (ryegrass/fescue) for family lawns, shade tolerant for north-facing or tree-shaded lawns, ornamental fine fescue for show lawns.
Yes, with a powered turf cutter. Then rotovate, level, add topsoil and consolidate before new turf goes down. Skipping this is the #1 reason new lawns fail.
1 to 2 days for a 50 m² lawn. Day 1 prep, day 2 lay and roll.
Turf for instant lawn usable in weeks. Seed is cheaper but takes 8-12 weeks, only spring/autumn, vulnerable to birds and weather.
