Local geography, property mix and what works.
Worcester is a working city built around the Severn and Cathedral, with a sharp split between the dense Victorian terrace streets close to the centre and the lower-density post-war estates on the edges. That split changes what's right for your drive and garden.
Near the river (WR1, WR2 Henwick, WR5 Diglis): the water table runs high and the Environment Agency flood-zone designation drives the planning conversation. We default to permeable surfaces here – resin bound on a permeable sub-base, or porous block paving with cellular sub-base, both of which keep surface water on your plot instead of pushing it onto the highway. Sealed surfaces (tarmac, conventional block paving) are still possible but need a SuDS feature (soakaway or planted strip) to stay compliant for new front-garden conversions over 5 m².
Inner suburbs (WR3 Barbourne & Rainbow Hill, WR1 St John's, WR2 St John's & Lower Wick): Victorian and Edwardian terraces with original brick boundary walls, often Conservation Area or with original front-garden tiling worth keeping. A dropped kerb only works if vehicle depth meets the 4.8m County Council rule; on the shallowest streets a single dropped kerb is denied but we can sometimes propose a shared or shortened crossing. Where a drive fits, gravel on a grid stabiliser and reclaimed-style edging tend to suit the period frontage best.
Outer estates (WR4 Warndon, Brickfields, Tolladine; WR5 Battenhall; WR2 Dines Green, St Peter's): the spec is open. Tarmac is the value workhorse, block paving is the kerb-appeal favourite (Worcester estate streets have a lot of block paving), resin bound is the rising premium choice, gravel suits the bungalows in Battenhall and the larger detached on St Peter's. Drives of 30–45 m² are usual and an itemised quote is in your inbox within 24 hours of the site visit.
Conservation Areas: the Cathedral Close, the Foregate, parts of Barbourne, the Glover and the Tything all have Conservation Area or Article 4 status. We've worked across all of them and will flag any extra permission steps before you commit to a spec.

Fencing & Turfing
Often yes, but only if vehicle depth from the back of the footway to your front wall is at least 4.8m – the Worcestershire County Council standard. Some St John's streets just don't have the depth; we'll measure on the free site visit and tell you straight before you pay the council application fee.
Permeable surfaces are the default in flood-zone properties: resin bound on a permeable sub-base, porous block paving, or gravel on a cellular grid. These keep surface water on-plot rather than adding to highway runoff. Sealed tarmac is still possible if you add a SuDS feature (soakaway), which we cost into the itemised quote.
Block paving has historically been the most popular finish in Warndon, Northwick, Brickfields and Battenhall – long lifespan, strong kerb appeal, easy panel replacement. In the last few years resin bound has overtaken block paving for new installs on detached and semi properties because it's permeable, weed-free and modern in appearance.
Yes, including the Foregate, Lich Street, the Cathedral precinct and the Tything. Many of these streets are Conservation Area or have Article 4 Directions; we'll flag any extra permission required before you commit to a spec.
Most driveway and fencing jobs in WR1–WR5 are scheduled 2 to 4 weeks after quote approval. Dropped kerbs are install-ready as soon as your Worcestershire County Council Vehicle Crossing approval comes through – typically 4–8 weeks for that part. Same-day on-site for the dropped kerb itself.
