The honest guide to gravel driveways in Worcestershire.
Gravel is the original permeable driveway surface and still one of the best. At Cathedral Landscapes we install gravel driveways across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn – from straightforward loose gravel for country properties to stabilised gravel-on-grid systems that give a firm, almost rigid surface while keeping the gravel look and the permeability benefits.
How much does a gravel driveway cost?
• Loose gravel on a properly built sub-base – the simplest entry-level permeable finish. Suitable for low-traffic country properties on flat ground.
• Stabilised gravel using a plastic honeycomb grid – an upgrade that holds every stone in place, eliminating ruts and migration. Worth it for any drive with regular vehicle traffic.
Even the stabilised version usually undercuts equivalent block paving or resin and you avoid any planning permission step. Free written quotes within 24 hours.
Loose gravel or stabilised gravel?
Loose gravel is fine on a flat, low traffic driveway and gives the most authentic countryside crunch. The downsides are migration (gravel ends up by the gate and on the road), ruts where wheels track repeatedly, weeds eventually finding the membrane joints, and difficulty for pushchairs, suitcases and wheelchairs.
Stabilised gravel using a plastic honeycomb grid eliminates all of the above. The grid (X-Grid, Gravelrings, NeoLoc and similar) sits on the sub-base, is filled flush with angular gravel, and locks every stone in place. The result is a firm, almost rigid surface that still drains, still crunches gently, and still costs less than block paving. For any modern household with deliveries, wheelchairs or buggies we strongly recommend stabilised.
How a gravel driveway is built properly
The biggest mistake we see is gravel tipped onto bare ground. A proper build is excavate to 150mm minimum, lay a non-woven geotextile separation membrane, compact 100mm of Type 1 MOT sub-base, lay a second weed membrane, then either spread 50mm of angular gravel directly OR lay the stabilising grid and fill flush with 14-20mm angular gravel. A hard front edge in block paving or granite sett stops scatter into the road.
Best gravel for a driveway in Worcestershire
Choose 14-20mm angular gravel – the irregular faces lock together under wheel loads. Popular local choices: Cotswold Buff (warm honey, perfect for stone cottages), Golden Flint (bright honey-gold), Silver Granite (cool greys, modern), Scottish Pebble (mixed greys), Plum Slate chippings (deep purple, contemporary). Avoid rounded pea shingle on driveways – it looks pretty but rolls under tyres and scatters fast.
Permeability and planning
Gravel is fully permeable and therefore exempt from the 2008 SUDS planning rules. You do not need planning permission for a gravel front driveway regardless of area, provided the rainfall drains into the ground rather than running off to the highway. This is one of the strongest reasons gravel has stayed popular.

Step 3
Most gravel driveways are installed in 1 to 2 days and ready to use immediately.
Gravel is the entry-level permeable tier. Stabilised-grid systems are an upgrade for drives with regular traffic. Final cost depends on the size and shape of the area, ground conditions and access.
10 to 15 years before a meaningful top-up. Stabilised gravel lasts longer because stones can't migrate or rut.
No. Gravel is fully permeable and SUDS compliant by default, so no planning is required even for driveways over 5 m².
14-20mm angular gravel. The irregular faces lock under wheels. Avoid rounded pea shingle – it rolls and scatters.
Not strictly, but a plastic honeycomb grid eliminates ruts and migration, makes the surface wheelchair / pushchair friendly and dramatically extends life. We recommend it on all vehicle driveways.
Use angular gravel, install a stabilising grid and put a hard front edge in block paving, granite setts or a recessed timber threshold.
The crunch is a feature for many owners – an effective low-tech security alarm. Stabilised gravel is significantly quieter than deep loose gravel.
