The complete garden fencing guide for Worcestershire homeowners.
A new fence has to do four things at once – mark a boundary, give privacy and security, stand up to British weather, and look right with the house and garden it surrounds. At Cathedral Landscapes we install every style of garden fencing across Worcester, Malvern, Droitwich, Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn, always with the right post and gravel board specification for the soil and exposure, so the fence stays vertical for decades not seasons.
How much does garden fencing cost in 2026?
Per linear metre, fully installed in Worcestershire:
• Lap panel 6ft on timber posts – entry-level boundary fence
• Lap panel 6ft on concrete posts and concrete gravel board – long-life standard, the best-value upgrade in fencing
• Closeboard / featheredge on concrete posts and gravel board – long-life premium boundary fence
• Slatted contemporary fencing – premium contemporary finish
• Picket fence 3-4ft – decorative front-boundary fence
• Removal of old fence and tip fees – priced per metre, included in your itemised quote
Final price depends on access, ground conditions (rocky / clay / made ground), any old fence to remove, and whether neighbours are splitting the cost. Every Cathedral Landscapes fencing quote is written, itemised and valid for 30 days.
Fence styles compared
Lap panel – the cheapest option. Pre-built 6ft x 6ft panels of overlapping horizontal boards in a frame. Fast to install, looks neat when new. Downsides: boards can blow out in storms, panels need replacing as a whole unit.
Closeboard (featheredge) – the workhorse of British garden fencing. Built on site from vertical featheredge boards nailed to horizontal arris rails, with a counter rail along the top and bottom for rigidity. Stronger, more private (no gaps between boards), longer lasting than lap panels. Individual boards can be replaced if damaged.
Slatted contemporary – horizontal slats with deliberate gaps for a modern, architectural look. Often used with hardwood like cedar or oak. Best where airflow through is desirable (windy gardens) or as a feature panel rather than a full boundary.
Picket – classic 3-4ft vertical picket fencing for cottage front gardens. Pointed or rounded tops, painted or stained.
Why concrete posts matter more than the panel
The single most important decision when buying a new fence is whether to use concrete or timber posts. Timber posts rot at ground level within 10 to 15 years – even pressure-treated, even tanalised – because the boundary between wet soil and oxygen is where decay happens fastest. Concrete posts last 30+ years and have a slotted profile that lets you slide panels in and out for easy future replacement. The post-and-gravel-board combination also keeps the timber panels off the wet ground, which prolongs panel life too. Concrete posts add a modest amount to the per-metre cost but roughly double the lifespan – the best-value upgrade in fencing.
Fencing rules, ownership and neighbours
Boundary fence ownership is set by the property deeds (look for the T-mark on the Title Plan from HM Land Registry). The popular "left or right" rule is a myth – always check the deeds. Where ownership is shared or unclear, we recommend agreeing the spec and cost with the neighbour before starting. Permitted development allows fencing up to 2m high (1m next to a public highway) without planning permission. Listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 Direction zones may have additional restrictions; we'll flag these during the free survey.

Step 3
Most residential fences are installed in 1 to 2 days. Concrete posts get 24 hours to cure before panels load.
Tiers: lap panel on timber posts is entry-level; lap panel or closeboard on concrete posts and gravel boards is the long-life standard; slatted is the premium contemporary tier. Every quote is written and itemised.
20-25 years on concrete posts and gravel boards. 10-15 years on timber posts in soil. Concrete posts roughly double the lifespan for a modest per-metre uplift – the best-value upgrade in fencing.
No, for fences up to 2m (1m next to a public highway). Above that needs planning. Listed buildings and conservation areas have extra rules.
Check the Title Plan from HM Land Registry – T-marks show which side is responsible. The "left or right" rule is a myth.
1 to 2 days for a typical 20-30m residential fence. Concrete posts cure for 24 hours before panels load. Old fence removal adds half a day.
1.8m closeboard on concrete posts and concrete gravel boards. Featheredge boards overlap with no gaps, concrete components prevent ground-level rot.
Lap is cheaper and faster to install but boards can blow out. Closeboard is stronger, more private and replaceable board-by-board. For permanent boundaries we recommend closeboard.
Concrete every time for boundary fences. Timber rots at ground level within 10-15 years. Concrete lasts 30+ years and lets you replace panels easily.
