The same surface doesn't suit every home.
Resin bound looks superb on a modern detached, less easy on a 12 m² Victorian terrace where the seamless surface highlights the awkward shape. Block paving reads as premium on a semi-detached frontage, can look heavy on a small bungalow. Tarmac is value-perfect for a modest new build, less right when the goal is kerb-appeal uplift. Gravel is the friend of the awkward narrow terrace drive but the enemy of the active wheelchair user.
Pick the guide for your property type below. Each page covers what works (and what doesn't), the typical install size and cost band, the surface options ranked, and the design considerations that come up most. If you're not sure which fits your home, call us on 01905 412 949 and we'll talk it through.
• Driveways for terraced houses – small footprints, often awkward shapes, drainage challenges, the surface choices that work on tight space.
• Driveways for semi-detached houses – the Worcestershire suburban classic. 30 to 45 m² with kerb appeal as the priority.
• Driveways for detached houses – large drives, sweep layouts, twin access, premium surface combinations.
• Driveways for bungalows – accessibility-first surfaces, smooth wheelchair-friendly finishes, low maintenance.
• Driveways for corner plots – wrap-around designs, twin access sweep-throughs, dual-aspect kerb appeal.
• Driveways for new build properties – upgrading the developer's basic finish, matching or upgrading the estate aesthetic.
The surface comparison – quick reference
• Entry-level permeable – Gravel, simplest install, no planning issues, awkward for wheelchair use
• Best value hard surface – Tarmac, low maintenance, modern look
• Premium permeable – Resin bound, seamless modern finish, accessibility-friendly
• Long-life specialist – Concrete / pattern imprinted, longest lifespan, design flexibility
• Premium kerb appeal – Block paving, the most kerb-appeal lift of any surface
Don't forget the dropped kerb – if your new driveway crosses the public footway, you'll need one. We can bundle both as a single project.

Small drives on tight footprints. Gravel and resin do the most with the space.
The Worcestershire suburban classic. Block paving, resin or tarmac – all viable.
Sweep designs, twin access, mixed-surface borders, premium finishes.
Smooth, level, low-maintenance – resin is the standout. Wheelchair-friendly.
Wrap-around layouts, sweep-throughs, two-frontage kerb appeal.
Upgrading the developer's basic finish to something that adds value.
It depends on shape, size, kerb appeal goal and usage. Quick rule of thumb: small terraced – gravel or resin; semi – block paving or resin; detached – block paving, resin or pattern concrete; bungalow – resin (accessibility); corner plot – block paving (modular handles complex shapes); new build upgrade – resin or block paving for kerb appeal lift.
Mostly through the size of the drive. A 12 m² terrace drive costs roughly half a 30 m² semi drive on the same surface. Property type also affects design complexity – corner plots and detached homes with sweep layouts cost more per m² than rectangular semi drives.
Often yes – if you have around 4.8m of front garden depth so a car parks fully clear of the footway. Many Worcester Victorian terraces have less than that and a driveway is not viable. See our terraced driveways guide.
Resin bound – seamless, smooth, weed-free, level. Pattern imprinted concrete is also excellent. Avoid gravel for active mobility users. See our bungalow driveways guide for the full accessibility breakdown.
Often yes – developers fit basic block paving or tarmac as the lowest-cost option. Upgrading to resin bound or premium block paving lifts kerb appeal and adds value. See our new build guide.
Yes – if your new driveway crosses the public footway you need a dropped kerb. We bundle both as a single project.
