Bungalows are usually the cleanest, simplest driveway jobs we do.
Worcestershire is full of bungalows – post-war detached bungalows of Northwick, Tolladine, Warndon and Crown East in Worcester; the 1960s bungalow developments of Malvern Wells and West Malvern; the retirement bungalows of Droitwich and Pershore. They share advantages for a driveway install: generous frontages, level ground, simple rectangular shape, often a hardstanding already in place. The owners want something smooth, low-maintenance, and right for them.
Surface ranked for a bungalow
Our recommended order for a typical 30 m² bungalow driveway:
• Resin bound – premium permeable – the bungalow standout. Seamless, smooth, level, weed-free, permeable, wheelchair-friendly, accessibility-friendly. Lasts 20+ years with virtually no maintenance. Our most-recommended surface for bungalow owners.
• Pattern imprinted concrete – long-life specialist – longer-lasting still (30+ years), wheelchair and scooter friendly, lots of pattern options. Slightly less smooth than resin (the pattern impression has texture) but still excellent.
• Tarmac – best value hard surface – the value-conscious choice. Smooth, low maintenance, wheelchair-friendly. Best with a granite or block-paving edge for kerb appeal.
• Block paving – premium kerb appeal – classic look but the joint pattern can be tiring for wheelchair users over time. Needs occasional re-sanding. Only recommended for non-active mobility households who want the kerb appeal.
• Gravel – entry-level permeable – the simplest install, but not recommended for active wheelchair, scooter or walker users. Loose surface is awkward with wheels and walking aids. Fine for a less active household.
Accessibility-specific considerations
If the driveway is part of an accessibility scheme:
• Flush threshold – the driveway meets the dropped kerb and the house entrance at the same level, no lip
• Wide enough for a side-loading wheelchair-accessible vehicle – we recommend 3m+ for room to deploy a side ramp
• Gentle gradient – we lay falls of 1:40 to 1:80 which is well within Part M (max 1:12)
• Slip-resistant surface – resin can be specified with high-grip aggregate; concrete is naturally textured; tarmac is naturally slip-resistant
Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)
If the driveway forms part of an Occupational Therapist-recommended accessibility scheme, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant from your district council – Worcester City, Malvern Hills, Wychavon (Droitwich, Pershore, Evesham) or Wyre Forest. We provide DFG-ready written quotes designed for OT and accessibility surveyor submission.
The dropped kerb side
An accessible driveway needs an accessible dropped kerb with tactile paving and a flush threshold. Bundled with the driveway as one project. To explore other property types, see our driveways by property type hub.
