A big driveway is an opportunity to do something proper.
Worcestershire's detached stock is wide-ranging – 1930s arts-and-crafts villas in Malvern Wells, 1960s and 70s family detached in Crown East and Powick, executive detached on newer estates around Pershore and Droitwich, and the larger period homes scattered through Battenhall and Hallow. They share a useful trait: 50 to 80 m² of front frontage and the design freedom that comes with it. A detached drive isn't constrained by a 4.8m square footprint – it's a canvas.
Surface choice on a detached drive
Every surface scales up well on detached drives. Our recommendations:
• Block paving – premium kerb appeal – the premium kerb-appeal choice. Detached scale lets you justify soldier-course detailing, contrast borders, pattern variation. Adds the most resale value.
• Resin bound – premium permeable – contemporary, seamless, easy to maintain. Pairs particularly well with grey-brick and white-render modern detached homes.
• Pattern imprinted concrete – long-life specialist – longest-lasting finish (30+ years), lots of pattern and colour options, very durable. Worth considering on heavy-use drives.
• Tarmac – best value hard surface – the value choice. Pair with a granite or natural stone setts edging to lift the finish.
• Gravel – entry-level permeable – the simplest install, period-appropriate on cottage and rural detached, permeable.
Mixed-surface designs
On a detached drive you can combine surfaces for visual interest and budget control. Common Worcestershire combinations:
• Block paving border around a tarmac centre – premium edge, value middle
• Resin bound centre with a block paving soldier course at the gateway and along the property line
• Pattern imprinted concrete with brick or stone setts at the corners and entrance
• Gravel main drive with a block paving central wheel-track strip for cleaner walking access
Mixed-surface design typically adds 10 to 20% to the all-block-paving price while keeping a high-end look. Often the smartest spend.
Layout designs
The big detached layouts:
• Wide rectangular – 5 to 6m wide, parking two cars front-to-back or side-by-side. Simplest, most common.
• Sweep drive – curves from a single dropped kerb through to a parking area, often with a turning circle so you don't reverse out. Premium look, requires 70+ m² to do well.
• Twin access sweep-through – two dropped kerbs at opposite ends of the frontage, driveway curves between them. Drive in one side, drive out the other. Safest and most visually striking but most expensive.
• Garage approach – straight drive leading to a garage at the side or back of the house. Common in 1960s and 70s detached.
The dropped kerb side
Single drop, double drop or twin access – we install the kerb with the driveway as one project. See our dropped kerbs for detached guide for the kerb side, or our driveways by property type hub for other layouts.

Yes – best on 70+ m² frontages. We design the radius, kerb intersection and surface so cars turn cleanly.
Drive in one dropped kerb, drive out the other. Safest layout on busy roads. Priced as two kerb installs plus the driveway sweep between.
Yes – resin centre with block border, tarmac with stone setts entrance, pattern concrete with feature corners. Smart way to combine kerb appeal and budget.
Block paving or pattern imprinted concrete – both rated for repeated vehicle loading with 30+ year lifespan.
Yes – a quality detached driveway materially lifts saleability through kerb appeal, off-street parking and the implicit signal that the rest of the property is well maintained. The size of the lift depends on the surface and design chosen and the local market.
