The most-installed driveway type in Worcestershire – here's how to do it right.
Semi-detached homes fill out almost every suburban street in Worcestershire – 1930s bay-fronted semis in Warndon, Northwick, Battenhall and Bromwich Road; post-war semis in Dines Green, Tolladine, Witton and Pickersleigh; modern brick semis on every newer estate from Lansdowne to Pershore. They give us our most predictable, most flexible canvas: 30 to 45 m² of mostly rectangular front garden, with frontage width of 5 to 8m and depth of 5 to 8m. That's enough room to make any surface look good and to park one or two cars comfortably.
Surface ranked for a typical semi
Our recommendation order for a typical 35 m² semi driveway:
• Block paving – premium kerb appeal – the kerb-appeal champion and the most common choice on Worcestershire semis. Edging, contrast border, soldier course at the entrance – you can design beautiful detail at this scale. Holds value well.
• Resin bound – premium permeable – the modern alternative. Seamless, weed-free, permeable, no joints to maintain. Pairs particularly well with grey-pointed modern brick and white render finishes.
• Tarmac – best value hard surface – the value choice. Simple, low-maintenance, durable, modern look. Pair with a granite or block-paver edging strip to lift kerb appeal.
• Pattern imprinted concrete – long-life specialist – long-lifespan finish, lots of pattern and colour options, very durable.
• Gravel – entry-level permeable – the simplest install, permeable, no planning issues. Best on lower-traffic semis where loose stones aren't a concern.
Single drive, double drive, or wider?
Most semi driveways fall into one of three layouts:
• Single drive (2.4m to 3.0m wide) – one car straight in. Suits households with one car or where the second car uses a garage.
• Double drive (4.8m to 6.0m wide) – two cars side by side. Most popular on a modern Worcestershire semi. Requires a double-width dropped kerb.
• Wider with turning area – on bigger semis (especially detached-feeling end-of-semis on a corner plot), enough room to turn so you don't have to reverse out onto the road. Requires careful design.
Drainage and SUDS
Any new front driveway over 5 m² in England must use a permeable surface, drain to a soakaway, or have planning permission. On most semi driveways the cleanest answer is either:
• Permeable surface – resin bound or gravel by default; permeable block paving (slightly more expensive than standard block paving) for the brick look
• Soakaway – a buried gravel pit or crate-system tank in the front garden that catches surface runoff. Engineered to the area you're paving.
• Permeable border strip – a strip of gravel or resin around an impermeable centre that does the SUDS job
We design every quote with the SUDS solution built in – no surprises.
The dropped kerb side of the project
Driveways and dropped kerbs are inseparable on a semi – you can't legally drive onto the new driveway without one. We bundle the work as one project. See our dropped kerbs for semi-detached guide for the kerb side. To explore other property types, browse our driveways by property type hub.

Step 3
Install: tarmac 1 to 2 days, resin 2 days, block paving 3 to 5 days. Dropped kerb included.
Pricing depends on the chosen surface tier, the size and shape of the drive and ground conditions. The dropped kerb is priced separately. Every quote is written and itemised.
Block paving for traditional kerb appeal, resin for modern seamless finish. Both lift property value most noticeably.
Most 1930s and post-war semis have enough frontage. We'll measure and confirm at the site visit, then size the drive (and the dropped kerb) accordingly.
Drives over 5 m² must use permeable surface, soakaway drainage or have planning permission. Resin and gravel are permeable; tarmac and block paving need a drainage strategy.
Yes – estate agents value off-street parking strongly, particularly in town locations. Block paving and resin lift saleability most.
Yes – semi dropped kerb bundled with the driveway as one project.
